Opposite of action

Opposite action works best when you’re all in. Commit to the opposite in your thoughts, words, and actions. Like all of the techniques we have been learning about, it takes a lot of practice to be able to use it skillfully. Every emotion is activating…emotions are hard-wired in our biology.


They get us ready to act. Here are some examples: Thirst: tells us that we need to hydrate.

It activates us to drink water. The walls we build around us to keep sadness out also keeps out the joy. But hold on, there’s a little more to the story — in order for this skill to actually help you, you need to know when it’s appropriate to use opposite action.


When you think about it, we all have emotions that can cause us to make choices we’d rather not make. That’s because, at the moment, your emotions override the logical part of your brain. This worksheet uses the DBT skill opposite action to teach clients how to overcome their negative emotions.

For instance, pushing yourself to have meals out at a restaurant (despite feeling afraid), would be taking an opposite action. Keep repeating your opposite action until your emotion changes.


However, choosing an opposite action when our urge will not be effective often does help us get to a better emotional place. When you experience an emotion, a behavior usually comes with it. Your body causes you to react to emotions in a specific way. Doing the opposite action will help you change your emotion.


If you are angry, you might fight or argue.
