This is a great example of typography and I really like the use of colour on this piece. The image is basically a man’s face that has been created with only text. Brody is an innovative thinker and expressed this using both design and type. Initially working in record cover design, Brody made his name largely through his revolutionary work as Art Director for the Face magazine.

The font is very bold and has great impact, the fact he has used different horizontal alignments of the text and scale creates the feeling of the text bouncing. Below is a link to some of his work. Brody takes a much more subtle approach — as can be seen in the first three letters of the word. In this piece of work for Nike, Brody combines a picture of a young athlete with a white backgroun showing us a two-dimensional line in the middle. It is this that makes viewers believe that they are looking at two separate images instead of one.

This could also be seen as an influence in Brody’s work as he also imitated pop culture within typography and graphics an example of this would be his work on album covers as a lot of his work has bright, block colours which is strongly associated with pop art. He spent three years studying at the London College of Printing where his work, which was quite experimental in nature, was met with quite unfavorable criticism because the school generally taught traditional printing methods. In this series, we are looking at designers that broke convention and thumbed their noses at the rules.
