Different words for love

In fact, there are more words for “love” than there are languages in the world. Let me explain with an example: The Japanese language has dozens of ways to say “you”. Because of these distinctions, we can learn that in order to truly enjoy eros we must also search for greater depths through philia and cultivate ludus, avoiding mania as our relationships mature.


There are polite forms, very polite forms. Love is different and using just one word for it can be confusing or misleading.

In the Greek, there are a number of words which. Most times, the Greek words for love used in the Bible are simply translated love but in the Greek text they mean different things. When this happens, unfortunately the true deeper meaning of the word is lost in the weak translation. The four Greek words for love are agape, phileo, eros and storge. Further complicating the idea of describing love in words is the fact that there are so many different types of love. As if it isn’t already impossible to describe the love experience in words, we are expected to find more words, more adjectives, adverbs and other nouns, to attach to that indescribable concept.
